In
wonderful condition for 100 year old pieces! No chips, cracks, crazing
or repairs - detailing is bright. This piece dates sometime between
1891 and 1920.
In
1890 the McKinley Tariff Act was passed by Congress which stated
effective March 1, 1891, items from Japan (as well as other countries)
were required to have a back stamp and recognized and accepted "Nippon"
as another word for Japan. In 1921, the US Government reversed its
position and decided the word Nippon was a Japanese word and effective
September 1, 1921, merchandise from Japan had to be marked with the
English word Japan instead of Nippon.
