Handsome
fold-out 1945 map of Japan and Korea, printed more than 75 years ago.
- This map was published
just after the end of the Second World War — and barely five months
after the dawn of the Atomic Age, with the bombing of the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- The map opens to a very generous 26" x 37" and was
compiled and drawn
in the cartographic section of the National Geographic Society, on a
scale of 1:3,000,000, with great detail and many hundreds of place
names.
- The map shows principal railroads, including dismantled
lines,
highways, canals, cities, towns, and natural features. Insets depict
Okinawa, Formosa (Taiwan), the Ryukyu Islands, Karafuto, and the Kurils
(Kuriles).
- A printed note states: "By the Cairo declaration of 1943,
the United States, Great Britain, and China promised that in due course
Korea (Chosen) shall become free and independent."
- A second note reads: "Manchuria, including the leased
territory of
Kwantung, is again under Chinese administration. Dairen becomes a free
port and Port Arthur a Chinese-Russian naval base."
- Condition: This map is in excellent
condition,
bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It
is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side, and it
folds to
6¾" x 8".
