Description: North American Hunting club Members rank among the most avid and successful outdoorsmen anywhere in the world.  They hunt with modern rifles, handguns and shotguns, blackpowder firearms, bows, crossbows, falcons and about any other legal method you can imagine. Putting it frankly, NAHC Members love hunting in all its shapes and forms.

But within that broad spectrum, each of us has a favorite; for every NAHC Member there is likely one special niche, one special place, one favorite kind of hunting.  There are numerous reasons for particular favorites.  Regardless of the reasons, the NAHC has long stood to help each of its Members enjoy their favorites even more.  This book, Bowhunting Big Game, is written for and dedicated to those NAHC Members who enjoy the challenges and fun of hunting with a bow.

As much as firearms hunters might deny it, there is indeed a special challenge in hunting with a stick, string and arrows.  That challenge is getting within spitting distance of wary game, such as a trophy white-tailed buck, a bugling bull elk or a strutting gobbler.  And it's that particular challenge that makes bowhunting so addicting to those who seriously try it.

Dan Dietrich isn't your everyday bowhunter. He is a student of the sport, having learned to make a compound bow and arrows from cedar shafts.  He will dig until he finds the right answer, and he isn't afraid to call on leading authorities for their expertise.  As senior editor for the North American Hunter magazine, Dan directs a stellar list of Bowhunting Advisory Council members: Chuck Adams, M. R. James, Jim Dougherty and Judd Cooney-all big names in modern bowhunting.  In addition, Dan has gained Associate Member status in bowhunting's prestigious Pope and Young Club by taking three record-book quality big-game animals during hunting trips throughout the United States and parts of Canada.

Dan's love of hunting grew out of his outdoor experiences as a youth on and around the Mississippi River's backwaters near the old river town of Red Wing, Minnesota.  During the 1970s Dan studied at Red wing's Environmental Learning center (ELC), one of the few educational facilities in the country dedicated to enriching young people's lives by teaching them outdoor crafts and skills.  In ELC's archery program, Dan learned about bows, arrows and bowhunting.  As a graduate of the ELC, Dan stayed on for a fifth year as an instructor-naturalist, then worked as an ELC field instructor.  He led young adults on kayaking, cave exploring and other outdoor adventures.  Moving on to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens point (UWSP), Dan found time to hunt upland birds and white-tailed deer.
