An original watercolour on paper by John Flexmore, who somehow neglected to signe and date it, but it is from the 1980s. A scene on the Murray River, probably near Echuca, of paddle steamer with its passengers, framed between pair slender gum trees, dense scrub far bank.

The reverse is of a pastoral scene, undulating pasture before rolling hills, wonderful clouds above, and a tiny cottage nestling in the foreground. This work is also unsigned.
Both works are good, and in outstanding condition.

John Flexmore, (1911 - 2004) was a well-known Melbourne artist, a watercolour specialist, mainly of representational landscapes. He studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1930-37 under Bernard Hall, Charles Wheeler and W.B. McInnes. After war service he painted mostly watercolour landscapes, but he also painted several oil portraits under commission. In his early days, made a considerable number of linotype prints. He held biennial one-man shows at the Athenaeum Gallery, Melbourne until 1970. Flexmore’s works are very easy to live with, being very restful. His work is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas.
