Rare Original Charles Valton Bronze Standing Lion

Offered here is an original Charles Valton bronze sculpture of a majestic lion standing on a stone ledge.  The lion stands 10 ¼ inch tall including the ¾ inch marble base.  Length is 10 1/2 inch. The color is variegated green-brown with faint red tints in some areas – an unusual and effective patination. The bronze is signed C. Valton.  It is attached to the red marble base with two hand cut nuts. The condition of the bronze and patina is excellent.  The marble base has a few dings seen in the images but no serious flaws.

The piece is rare.  I have not found it in the auction records, although it is similar in size and appearance to another Valton lion with a raised paw, which I’ve shown in the images.  The hammer prices for the two auction references for the lion with raised paw were $3937 and $3859 or about $5000 including buyer’s premium. We are offering ours well below that.  The price is firm.
