As radio songs go, they don't come any more calculated than the title track of Michelle Wright's sixth album, her first in as many years. Written by three people (none of them Wright) and brimming over with arena-size guitars and a chorus that seems to be a cut-and-paste of all the singles on Shania Twain's Come On Over, the tune is undeniably catchy but leaves much to be desired in the originality department. The Merlin, Ontario-born singer does manage to come up with a few tunes of subtler, more beguiling charms. Although "Find It in New York" is a little too close to Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" for comfort, "Still No Shangri-La" is a gentle, appealing pop ballad, and Wright's gutsy, powerful vocal performance on "Sorry" shows why the 41-year-old has won so many awards, both in Canada and the U.S. "Thank You for Your Love" is mawkish beyond repair, however, and Shut Up and Kiss Me ends up a spotty affair by a singer unsure of whether to commit completely to the demands of the marketplace or to aim for something a little higher. --Shawn Conner
