Born on the Côte d'Azur, Michel Ocelot spent his childhood years in Guinea and teenage years in Anjou. After studying art, he turned to animation, producing short films on holidays, aided and abetted by a group of friends who each contributed a different technique (cartoons, puppets and more). Michel Ocelot leaned toward animating characters using paper cutouts. From these first experiences, he acquired a taste for diversity in his creations and an uncluttered approach to technique. He produced the animated series Les Aventures de Gédéon (1976) from stories by Benjamin Rabier, then created characters and decoration via paper-snowflake methods for his first professional short Les Trois Inventeurs (1979). This highly original work was awarded a BAFTA in London. The film became an inspiration for the stories and graphics in all Michel Ocelot's creations. Then followed the shorts Les Filles de l’Égalité (1981), which received the Special Jury Prize at the Albi Festival, Beyond Oil (1982) and La Légende du Pauvre Bossu (winner of the 1982 César for Best Animated Film). Michel Ocelot returned to TV series with La Princesse Insensible (1986), which comprised 13 four-minute episodes, and produced the short film Les Quatre Voeux (1987). His third series, Ciné Si (1989 - eight 12-minutes episodes), was animated using shadow-theatre techniques (delicately cut-out silhouettes against black paper). Several of these segments featured in Princes et Princesses (2000). He created the 26-minute programme Les Contes de la Nuit (1992), made in three segments, and then launched himself into producing his first animated feature film. In 1998, the public discovered Michel Ocelot thanks to massive public and critical acclaim for Kirikou et la Sorcière. The outstanding success of this film persuaded Ocelot to tell more stories featuring his little heroes in Kirikou et les Bêtes Sauvages (2005), co-directed with Bénédicte Galup. Under meticulous preparation since 2001, Azur et Asmar is an innovative project from every angle. Michel Ocelot collaborated with a producer of real-life shots (Christophe Rossignon from Nord Ouest), mixed 3D and 2D and brought together his production and animation team in his hometown of Paris. Unlike most other French animation productions, Azur et Asmar was fully made in Paris. Ocelot also presided over ASIFA (the International Animated Film Society) from 1994 to 2000.
