Middle Paleolithic Fontmaure is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. It is located in the Vienne region, in the middle of France. Artifacts from Fontmaure have been dated 80.000-40.000 years BP and are fashioned by the Neanderthal people. The unique and extremely beautiful artifacts are often made of jasper. This jasper is only found at this site and makes these tools unique in the world. The small and intensively occupied site of Fontmaure was located directly on exposure of high quality jasper. The coincidence between raw material and the occurrence of this intensively occupied open-air sites is one of the most striking characteristics of Middle Paleolithic site distributions in SW France.
