Oil on canvas by Nono, a listed artist on the worthpoint site, depicting a modernist or abstract style market scene with women of African descent in Haiti.

Approx. 8 x 10” unframed painting in good, original condition and fresh to the market. See my other eBay listing for another painting by NONO.

This is a Haitian art painting. It reminds me of the work of Felix Jean and others noted for their market scenes. Although, this painting by Nono seems more painterly than most from the Port-au-Prince school. When I first saw it, it struck me as an abstract, but of course that was just a first impression before I looked at everything going on in the piece. The contrast of colors makes this a really eye-catching painting.

The world’s first black republic was Haiti, but I’m not sure how much of a tourist destination it actually is due to political unrest. I think most visitors are there as part of cruise ship excursion, but regardless, I’m always amazed when Haitian paintings turn up here in the USA. Not all of them are good, but this one is a very good example.

As of at least 2020, I’ve noticed that the New York blue chip auction world is including more and more Haitian art in their Latin American Art sales. A painting by Hector Hyppolite recently fetched 100K USD at auction, so it’s an emerging market.
