Antique December 1911 E. W. Howe's Monthly, a farmer's magazine for town
people, from Potato Hill Farm in Atchison, Kansas, in very good
condition. It measures 7" x 4 1/2", contains 64 pages and includes
stories about current events of the time, along with many quotes of
wisdom. Truly an interesting read. Edgar Watson Howe (1853 - 1937) was
an American novelist and newspaper and magazine editor in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. He fought for the Union in the Civil War and
established a newspaper Bethany, Missouri to advocate his cause.
Following successful, but short lived, endeavors operating newspapers in
Colorado and Nebraska, Howe established "The Globe" in Atchison, Kansas
in 1877 (Now the "Atchison Daily Globe"). He is perhaps best known,
however, for "E. W. Howe's Monthly" (1911 - 1913), a periodical in which
he was the sole writer (though freely and frequently quoting the
writings of others), and one in which he would pontificate his political
view and thoughts on the news of the day. An excellent source of
additional information can be found in "A Critical Review of E. W.
Howe's Monthly" a master's thesis by Della Josephine Heckert of Kansas
State College, Pittsburg, Kansas (1961). Extant copies of the Monthly
are scarce, and only a handful are found in libraries. Enjoy!
