This is a 1000 Dong banknote, printed in 1988 in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It features the likeness of Ho Chi Minh (Nguyễn Sinh Cung), the long time leader of of the Communist Party of Vietnam. "Uncle Ho" first became active during World War 1, as Vietnamese nationalists began fighting for liberation from France, and in 1919 he joined the French Section of the Workers International. Ho did not survive the Second Indochina War ("the Vietnam War"), but his name and face remain iconic in Vietnam and many other nations that struggle(d) for independence.
