PHOTO SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS - EX RR 16TH CLASS BEYER-GARRATT AT DOUGLAS COLLIERY A NUMBER OF SOUTH AFRICAN AND RHODESIAN RAILWAYS STEAM LOCOMOTIVES ENDED THEIR DAYS IN INDUSTRIAL SERVICE FOLLOWING THEIR WITHDRAWAL FROM MAIN LINE SERVICE THIS IS EX RHODESIAN RAILWAYS 16TH CLASS 2-8-2 + 2-8-2 BEYER-GARRATT NO612 AT THE DOUGLAS COLLIERY SOUTH OF WITBANK IN WHAT WAS THEN THE TRANSVAAL THE FIRST BATCH OF RR 16TH CLASS GARRATTS WAS BUILT BY BEYER PEACKOCK AND INTRODUCED IN 1929 HOWEVER JOHN COSFORD ADVISED ME THAT THIS LOCO WAS FROM THE SECOND BATCH WHICH WAS BUILT BY BEYER PEACOCK IN 1938 BY LATE 1975 THIS LOCO WAS BACK AT DUNNS WITBANK IT WAS FITTED WITH A GIESEL EJECTOR AND BY EARLY 1976 IT WAS ON HIRE TO DURBAN NAVIGATION COLLIERIES IN NATAL BY 1984 IT WAS BACK AT DUNNS IN A DISMANTLED STATE AND WAS PRESUMABLY LATER SCRAPPED COPYRIGHT (Photograph and text in Extra Info) : RON FISHERPHOTO PAPER THICKNESS NORMAL PHOTOGRAPH THICKNESS
