lithographed fold-out pre-Civil War chart of New River Inlet and
vicinity, North Carolina, printed more than 165 years ago
- This map is drawn on a scale
of 1:15,000 and was compiled for
the United States Coast Survey under the direction of Lieutenant
Commander John Newland Maffitt.
- The image area measures 42.7 x 34.5 cm [17" x 13½"], and
details include soundings, bottom conditions, oyster beds, sailing directions,
and
notes on
tides.
- Named features include Stump Sound, Wilson's Bluff, Piney
Point, and a triangular landform at the inlet's mouth labeled Dry
Middle.
- The map's full title is Reconnaissance of New
River and Bar, North
Carolina, and it was published in a
report
by the U.S. Coast Survey, A.D. Bache, Superintendent.

Condition: It is in excellent condition,
bright
and clean, with folds, as issued, and no
rips, tears, or writing. It is printed on a
lightweight paper, typical of mid-19th century
government fold-outs, and is
blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the

- Eight years after this map was
printed, John Maffitt resigned his U.S. naval commission and became a
First
Lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy.
- In 1862 he became the first
commanding officer of the cruiser CSS Florida. In
1864-65, Commander Maffitt commanded Rebel blockade runners and the
ironclad Albemarle.
