This book a excellent and comprehensive history of the 10th New York Cavalry Regiment, one of the first cavalry units provided for federal service during the Civil War. Nicknamed the “Porter Guards,” in honor of Colonel Peter Buel Porter who served with distinction during the War of 1812 and later as Secretary of War under President John Quincy Adams. The 10th New York served in the Army of the Potomac for the duration of the war, being mustered out in August 1865. The unit participated in many of the largest and bloodiest cavalry fights of the war. Its story is full of bravery and heroism and the unit’s casualties are among the highest of the war. The unit participated in the defenses of Washington, the Battle of Fredericksburg, Stoneman’s Raid to Richmond, the Battles of Brandy Station, Middleburg, Gettysburg, Sheppardstown, Sulphur Springs, Bristoe Station, Hawe’s Shop, during Sheridan’s Second Raid to Trevillian Station, Trevellian Station, St. Mary’s Church, during the expedition to and skirmish at Stony Creek Station, in the Battle of Hatcher’s Run, Sailor’s Creek, and Appomattox Court House.
