This type of tool with one
unknapped face coming from this region of the Atlantic coast are often
mistakenly considered as Acheulean Hand Axe.
In reality they have been dated to the end of Palaeolithic or Mesolitic.
They were used to take off shells from rocks and also to open and consume them (limpet, barnacle, Oyster…)
In this area, humans groups whose main source of food came from the sea.
The "Ancoriense / Camposanquiense", is related to the "Asturiense" culture that developed on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea.
Those tools were tossed around by the tides of the sea and are now found along the coastline of Ancora. They were made from local quartzite pebbles and are characteristic of a later stage of the Pleistocene.
