This 1800s rabbit game dish is a great piece of yellow ware.  This is the smallest of the game dishes made by Wedgwood in this popular form.  The molded detail in the base and lid is exceptional.  Measuring only 7 ½” long by 4 ½” high to the top of the rabbit handle, the raised relief is simply exceptional.  This yellow ware form is referred to as cane with only the inside of the base being glazed.  This allows for the great molded detail that would not be as prominent if the surface was glazed.   The lid has a perfectly formed rabbit handle surrounded by four groups of game birds and rabbits.  The lid has two vent holes to vent steam during baking.  The side of the game dish features six groups of partridges and snipes hanging with clusters of grapes.  Game dish liners rarely survived, this has its liner in mint condition.  The game dish is near mint condition with only a flake on the underside of the lid from use that doesn’t show and no other chips, cracks or repairs.  Most game dishes are stained from use, this one got very little use with no stains or discolorations.  The underside is impressed “WEDGWOOD”.  This is an exceptional piece of yellow ware that would enhance any collection.
