This is the original Revell decal sheet from its 1:72 scale model of Jacques Cousteau’s Calypso PBY-6A Catalina “Flying Boat“ amphibious aircraft. Decal is unused, in superb, glossy, as-new condition, flat, no cracks, ready for application. Size of decal sheet is 5⅝″ X 2½″. MPN #87629
The PBY Catalinas were produced between 1936 and 1945 by Consolidated Aircraft. The PBY-6A was the first amphibious version with retractable landing gear. The certificate for aircraft number N101CS was issued to Jacques Cousteau on 08/26/1974 for The Cousteau Society. Revell produced the kit in 1977. On 6/28/79, while Calypso was undergoing a $160,000 upgrade in Portugal, Philippe Cousteau — Jacques Cousteau’s second son, film co-producer, and designated successor — died when the Catalina hit a sand bar in the Tagus river near Lisbon on a post-upgrade high-speed taxiing test run. Revell ceased production and sales of the kit, making it a rarity.
