Handsome
original antique engraved portrait of General Winfield Scott.
- This oval portrait of
Scott was engraved by Charles Hall from a daguerreotype photograph by
Mathew Brady.
- It
is set within a highly decorative frame, capped with a
vignette of the archangel Gabriel.
- Beneath the portrait is a scene from the Niagara campaign
during the War of 1812. It shows the badly wounded Colonel Solomon Van
Rensselaer being carried off the battlefield, shortly before Scott
took command of the American forces.
- Scott's signature,
in facsimile, is at the bottom
of the sheet.
- The image area measures 23 x 15 cm [9" x 6"] on a
larger sheet, published in Robert Tomes' Battles of America
by Sea and Land;
Virtue & Company, 26 John Street, New York, 1861.
- Condition: It is in excellent condition,
bright and clean, with no
marks, rips, tears, or creases.
It is printed on a heavy paper, with original tissue overlay, and is
