This book is one of the treasures of my library. I truly value having all these accounts of these key events of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by those who were there and witnessed and were part of them. John Welch also provides us with a good historical background and chronology of these events so we can better judge or ourselves what happened and what the events mean.

There are also photographs and illustrations included. A great book and one everyone who values the history of the Church should have.

If you want to read the earliest accounts about the historical experiences that members of the LDS church base their lives and testimonies on, you can do no better than here. This book has chapters for the Book of Mormon translation, the restoration of the Priesthood, First Vision accounts and a couple others. Each chapter has an introductory essay and then has the earliest documents we have from believers and members of the LDS church as well as from detractors and dissidents who had something to say on the topic. 

I really enjoyed reading the earliest texts, good and bad, instead of seeing them through somebody else's interpretation. The essays do give some background, but the meat here are the pages and pages of accounts from journals and periodicals I'd never read directly but had heard some of them filtered through other books and articles I've read through the years.  Highly recommended to anyone interested in the history of foundational events of Mormonism.

A wonderful book with multiple witnesses of divine manifestations during the early years of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The chapters with the newspaper interviews regarding the First Vision, Translation of the Book of Mormon, and the mantle following on Brigham Young were great. Just showed the power of one of more (many more) witnesses.

This book is full of great information and fascinating facts. It is written by multiple authors, or I should say, contributors, which can’t help but make some of the chapters better written and more interesting than others. The more factual, less well-written parts were hard for me to slug through, although they held many great treasures of information for those willing to mine them.

I especially liked the compilation of Brigham Young mantle stories--I had never seen them all gathered in one place before.

This is a really great reference book. It contains all the text of all the versions of Joseph's Smith's tellings of his first version, including audiences of them and explanations of the various elements in them. It also contains 202 separate statements about the translation of the Book of Mormon from many people who had something to do with it, or who were around as it was happening. There are several other major revelations or events that have similar documentation. Very interesting, and a helpful book to have around!

I had heard though out my life that Joseph Smith had received many Heavenly manifestations and desire to read about them. So when I saw this book referenced in am article I was reading, I immediately bought it. It is wonderful and I'll be re-reading it several times.
