(Description

Herbertshohe, a village in New Britain on the shores of Blanche Bay, was the site of a landing by troops of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force on the morning of 11 September 1914. Originally only 25 personnel were landed and they advanced inland towards the village of Toma. They advanced approximately half the distance and encountered no opposition, but turned back fearing they were in danger of becoming isolated from their support at Herbertshohe. A larger force consisting of four companies of infantry, a machine-gun section, and a 12-pounder gun were landed at Herbertshohe during the afternoon.)
