History
books on this topic only go so far into what was happening in the moment during
the confusing hours of battle. This book gives a rare insight to what the
commanders were messaging back and forth between the companies, and the battalion
commanders. Also, dispatches sent to and from the division headquarter
elements.
A
truly fascinating look at the campaigns of the 2nd Infantry Division’s
during World War One from the inside.
A
brief history of the actions of Marines during World War One is as follows:
The
3rd Infantry Brigade was originally formed during WWI. It served in France as one of the two infantry
brigades of the 2nd Infantry Division and all Marine combat units in World War I were
organized under the 4th Marine Brigade. The 4th fought actions at Asine
Defensive, Belleau Woods, Soissons, St Mihiel, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse Argonne campaign.
The
Victory medal awarded to the 2nd Division had five campaign bars. In
order, from top to bottom, was the Aisne, Aisne Marne, St Mihiel, Meuse
Argonne, and the Defensive Sector.
