Scarce 19th Century Mayer Arsenal Pottery 8.25” Floral Anchor Woven Majolica Jug.

This scarce piece is truly a sight to behold. A late 19th century c. 1880 majolica jug, crafted by Mayer’s Arsenal Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey. Previously unidentified, this pattern was positively attributed in the 1999s after an excavation of the former Arsenal Pottery factory site in Trenton.

Though flawed, this fabulous jug is in decent condition for its age and rarity. There is lots of glaze loss and chipping and several significant chips along the spout as well as a lot of smaller chips and nicks. There is a dark internal glaze crack that is only at the glaze level and does not go through the entire piece (not visible from the outside). The pattern number “23” is marked on the underside. There is no factory mark, as consistent with Arsenal pieces of the period. There is lots of glazing, discoloration, and glaze chipping inside the jug.
