What Are Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets?

These are not your average refrigerator magnets! Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets available, and even if you've never heard of them before, you probably use them every day. They're sometimes called NdFeB, or Neo magnets, and despite being so strong, they're also lightweight, which is why they're popular for a wide variety of applications. It's hard to believe, but without this type of rare earth magnet, many of the technological advances that have taken place over the past few decades would not have been possible!

Use of Neodymium Magnets:

How can you use these magnets? Here are some examples how people have used them. Their main advantage is their low weight and size, can be easily carried around and are very practical. They are relatively cheap and you can have at home several of them in different sizes for different uses.

Holding things in place
Crafts
As oil filters - remove iron and metal chips from oil
Door closing on wardrobes, cabinets or cupboards
Fridge magnets
Magic tricks
Model making
Cleaning fish tanks
Repair fridge seal
Stronger cabinet latches
Clip on earrings, jewellery, name tags, clasps
And many more uses around the house and workplace.
Safety with Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium Magnet Safety

Due to their strong magnetic properties, neodymium magnets can be dangerous, especially small magnets around young children. If ingested, they can block the respiratory and digestive tracts. Larger magnets, usually the size of the palm of your hand, will affect any magnetic or electronic items in the vicinity. Never place large magnets near computers / laptops. They will also erase information on magnetic stripe cards (credit cards).

WARNING: Be very careful when handling thin magnets, as due to their great attraction force they can stick abruptly and break
