Magnum Opus The Building of the Schoenstein Organ at the Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah
About the Book:
This beautifully written and illustrated book by John Longhurst, Retired Senior Tabernacle Organist, chronicles the development of the organ in the new LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City from the development of the building itself, whether the organ would be electronic or winded, how the acoustics of the immense room would be handled, the choice of a builder, the evolution of the organ’s appearance and stop list, the challenges of designing the organ’s console, the installation and finishing of the organ, and analysis and description of the final result. There are appendices showing pipe scales, the console layout and the Schoenstein & Co. Pipe Organ Tonal Color Wheel, a fascinating presentation of tonal design considerations, and even a timeline of the organ’s building.
Also included in the book are notes concerning the church’s history and involvement with music, as well as the several organs located in the Temple Square area of Salt Lake City.
A demonstration CD is included with the book, offering samples of the various tonal families and features of the organ narrated by Jack Bethards, President of Schoenstein and Co., and several pieces of literature performed by organists John Longhurst, Clay Christiansen, and Andrew Unsworth.
