The largest of all barrel cacti is native to the deserts of northeastern and central Mexico and can reach a height of up to 2.5 m, with a diameter of 1,5 m. It grows relatively slowly and forms a deeply ridged, dark green stem armed with short brown spines. It does best in dry, warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 10 to 11 and should be kept as dry as possible during winter..

Germination
As perennials, cacti and succulents can be sown throughout the year. For seeding use cactus potting soil such as coco or peat moss, with perlite or vermiculite. Surface sow and cover very lightly.
