Original antique map of the city of Paris and vicinity, with decorative scrollwork border, printed more than 165 years ago.

  • The coverage area extends from Versailles to Neuilly-sur-Marne, between Montmorency and Thiais, and there is excellent detail throughout, showing individual buildings, gardens, estates, temples, forests, fields, farms, rivers, roadways, trains, and topographical features.

  • Among the specific named places and features are Bois de Boulogne, Seine River, Paris & Orleans Railway, Parc de Vincennes, Champ de Mars, Epinay sur Seine, Chareston, Chaple de la Madeleine, Villetaneuse, Saint-Denis, Villiers la Garenne, Champigny, Canal de l'Ourcq Forêt de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Montreuil, Saint-Hilaire, Marseille Railway, and Champs-Élysées.

  • The image area measures 32.6 x 40 cm [12¾" x 15¾"], and the map has two distance scales, measured in English miles and French leagues.

  • It is titled The Environs of Paris and copyrighted 1855 by J.H. Colton in the upper margin.

  • Condition:  The map is in very good condition, sound and clean, with faint toning along the paper edges and no marks, rips, or tears. There is letterpress on the reverse side, with no bleed-through. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.

  • It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine.

  • It was published as Plate 8 in Colton's Atlas of the World, Illustrating Political and Physical Geography, by George W. Colton, New York, 1856.

  • The Colton name is one of the most respected in the history of American map making. Colton's maps were engraved on steel plates and then transferred to lithographic stones for printing, which resulted in a high quality product. Each map was then individually hand colored.

  • Colton maps are proudly displayed in fine libraries and private collections around the world.
