BERLIN SIGNED KPM OVAL PORCELAIN PLAQUE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN 100% HAND PAINTED

A finely painted oval shaped antique porcelain plaque portraying a portrait of a beautiful woman looking to her left.  The plaque shown in my photos is the actual item you will receive.  Please be sure to read the “Age and Condition” and “Approximate Dimensions” paragraphs below.

The plaque is very well painted (it is 100% hand painted) by a very skilled artist.  The subject is wearing a medieval style green and gold skull cap or coif and a high collared white blouse.  The portrait is very life-like and just stunning!

This piece has been in my personal collection since 2000.  I see no evidence of an artist’s signature on this one.  The back side of the plaque is marked with the letters “K. P. M” the KPM “scepter mark” along with “Sz 3” and a small rectangular mark.  There is also an old paper label there with the number “786” written on it in looks to me like the numbers were written with a quill pen.  There are also marks in pencil that appear to read “7397”.  The plaque itself is quite concave in shape and the porcelain is fairly dense and heavy.  There is also a vintage gold finished wood frame that is a part of this sale, but to my knowledge, the plaque has never been mounted in this frame.

Regardless, a strikingly beautiful plaque!!!

Many people put great emphasis on the “artist’s signature” or the “mark” on the obverse of a piece of porcelain such as this.  However, as experienced collectors of porcelain we have come to realize over the years that the marks on the bottom or back of a piece (such as the “beehive” mark) and the artist signature (like “Wagner”) do not define the piece.  Instead, the style and quality of the decoration and the artistry of the portrait are what really matters.

In reading and looking through the beautiful book KPM Plaques: Gaining and Insight into the Art of Painting on Porcelain by Sean Shakrovski and Vera Rininberg before writing this listing I found nothing that left me feeling this was anything other than an authentic KPM plaque.  I will also point out the that this same portrait was not pictured in this book leading me to believe it might be a bit unusual.

I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.  Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.  However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.  I will get back to you as soon as I am able.  I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

Age and Condition

Circa 1900.

It is in excellent to very near mint original condition.  Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.  I see no chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the porcelain, but there is one extremely tiny flake or fleabite to the outer edge at about the 7:30 clock position on the plaque.  I also examined the plaque thoroughly front and back under a black-light and found no evidence of any damage or repairs.  I see no obvious sign of any wear or use to the surface.  There is some age-related discoloration to the unglazed porcelain on the reverse side - see the photos.  A stunningly beautiful plaque in near pristine condition and in remarkable shape for its age.  The frame that is part of this sale has several small dings and a bit of loss to the gold.  Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times bigger in the photos than it really is.

Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.  It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.

Approximate Dimensions

The porcelain plaque measures about 6.75” (17.1 cm) top to bottom by about 5” (12.7 cm) left to right by about .375” (1 cm) in overall thickness.  The wood frame by itself measures about 8.375” (21.3 cm) by about 6.25” (15.9 cm) by about 1” (2.5 cm) in overall thickness.

Approximate Weight

About 11.375 ounces (323 grams) for the plaque & frame together.
