1939 Hotel Shaw brochure
with birds-eye-view map of San Francisco and vicinity, printed more
than 83 years
ago.
- The front cover has a
dramatic head-on view of the hotel,
built on the site of the former Callaghan Building, at the gore of
Market and McAllister at Jones Street.
- A sparkling silver ink gives the cover an extra touch of
charm, and the
brochure opens to 7¾" x 14".
- There are photographs of the hotel's lobby and one of the
guest rooms.
All rooms had "hand phones, night lamps, bath, shower, and circulating
ice water." Room rates were $2.00 to $3.50.
- The brochure includes
a reference
to the 1939 Golden Gate International Expostion, "A Pageant of the
Pacific," which showcases the products and cultures of the nations
surrounding the Pacific Ocean, with San Francisco serving as the
gateway. Among the fair's
featured installation was "The Tower of the Sun," an 80-ft statue of
Pacifica, depicted
on the front cover of this brochure.
- Condition: The brochure folds to 7¾" x 3½" and
is in excellent
condition, bright and clean, with
no marks, rips, or tears. Please

- Footnote: The hotel retained its name as the
Hotel Shaw until 1982,
when its name was changed to Hotel Miramar. It was then renamed the
United Nations Plaza Hotel, and today it is known as the Renoir Hotel.
