Bella Resek was an accomplished Jewish musician and music/vocal teacher in Vienna, born in 1895. She and her family were forced to flee Austria in the late 1930's upon the outbreak of WW2. They barely escaped Nazi persecution, heading east or south. Some traveled overland via the Siberian Railroad while others traveled on ships flying neutral flags. Their destination was SHANGHAI China!!
They were part of the refugee/expatriate/foreign allies community in Shanghai for almost a decade, when they were forced to flee again - this time when Shanghai fell to the Communists in 1949!!
Bella's daughter Erika is the writer (or recipient) of most of the letters. While in Shanghai, she got married and became Erika Myers (Meiers) which means some of the letters are to or from a Meier (usually Erika).
Most covers still contain their original letters, hand written in German!
