Birdlovers: This listing is for an antique French Faience art pottery plate. In the center it features a Bird visiting a Caged Bird. Damselfly and Lavendar decorate the scalloped ring.
The plate measures 9 1/3 inches or 25 cm in diameter. It has a white ground with a slightly scalloped edge; it is further decorated with a g border.
It has nice attention to detail throughout, and the polychrome colors are beautiful. There is no pottery mark on the back but I bought it at our monthly trips to the Nancy (France) Fleamarket in the 80s when we were stationed across the border in Germany.
A rare find in this great condition! There is a craquelure, grazing pattern in the white glaze on the back with one tiny tiny chips on the back bottom edge, not visible from the front.Tiny little pinholes and one rough spot on the front rim are from manufacturing process and these darkened with age. Please see the many photos (or ask for more) as they are a very important part of the description. It also has 3 raised unfired spots from the manufacturing process where it set in the kiln, great testimony to the hand made process and age.
We retired and are downsizing to 'fit' into our condo, so we are letting go of many treasured pieces accumulated while living and working around the globe.
Thank you for looking!
