Original large-format 1752 map of northern India, compiled by
the French cartographer and geographer Jean Baptiste Bourgignon
d’Anville for the East India Company.
- The image area measures a
very generous 45 x 103 cm [17¾" x
40½"], and the title, displayed in an oversized, ornate cartouche is
"Carte de l'Inde Dressée pour la Compagnie des Indes, Par le Sr.
d'Anville,
Sécrétaire de S.A.S.Mgr. le Duc d'Orléans, Novembre 1752."
- The coverage area extends from Gujarat to the Irrawaddy
River, between
Delhi and Bombay. Relief is shown pictorially, and there are five inset
maps: Negrais, Rivière d'Aracan, Riv. de Sirian, Archipel de Merghi,
and Environs de Junkselon.
- Among the other named places and features are Agra,
Patna, Benares, Calcutta, Minapur, and Kupelé, the straits through
which the Ganges emerges into India.
- The map was engraved by Jean-Baptiste Delafosse,
and the cartouche was drawn by Hubert François Gravelot.
- Condition:
The map is in excellent condition, bright and
clean, with four vertical folds and no
marks, rips, or tears. Please see the
