Female Perversions starring Tilda Swinton, Amy Madigan, Karen Sillas, Frances Fisher, Clancy Brown, Paulina Porizkova, Laila Robins and directed by Susan Streitfeld.

The Story: Dresses, lipsticks, sex - the "perversions" (and neuroses) of Eve, a young and successful lawyer. Her days are a tightrope act between extreme eloquence and frosty toughness on the one side, and scary vulnerability on the other. The apex of her career shall be her forthcoming appointment as a judge, but this step is interrupted by her kleptomaniac sister Madge, who is arrested after one of her capers.

Comment: The lurid title comes from the 1996 Louise Kaplan book Female Perversions: The Temptations of Emma Bovary, on which the film is based. Readers (of the book) and viewers (of the film) fall into two camps: love it or hate it - there isn't any middle ground. That said, the idea of a career-driven woman finding herself disconnected from emotions and vacant in today's society is the subject of at least one daytime television program daily. The presentation of Eve Stevens in Female Perversions is not the sugar-coated world of The View, but a carefully crafted life-study (accurate in minute and painful details).

The film has the slick, professional look of a feature film - perhaps not what you would expect from Susan Streitfeld or 'female protest' films in general. The clue to this is buried in the credits: Zalman King (Red Shoe Diaries etc.) was the Executive Producer and hired Streitfeld for her directorial debut. In Hollywood parlance, Executive Producers usually put up the money but not much else. In Female Perversions, Zalman King's talents and touches are all over the film. That's a good thing: there are few directors in Hollywood that can produce a beautiful, professional feature film as can King. For this film, Streitfeld received a Grand Jury Nomination at Sundance; Tilda Swinton was nominated for Best Actress by the Boston Society of Film Critics.
