The serape (also spelled sarape) is a traditional striped weave rectangular blanket. The origin is a blend of Aztec and Spanish. The Aztec used an ancient technique where they were woven out of cotton and agave fibres and dyed using natural materials like insects and fruits. The Aztecs believed that wearing bright colours would bring favours from the gods, while warding off any evil spirits.  The Spanish introduction of the pedal loom and domesticated wool, create an object that exists somewhere between poncho and blanket. Serapes were originally worn by men, while women would wear similar woven blanket-like garments called rebozos or huipiles.
The multi-function serape has long been used for many different purposes, including; a place to sit down, sleeping mat, pillow, shoulder wrap, poncho, horse blanket, room divider, doorway cover, furniture throw, tablecloth, window treatment, rug, wall hanging, and more.
