1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold
Double Eagle
In 1933
America was already years into the Great Depression, and President Franklin D.
Roosevelt was looking for solutions to end the country's ongoing bank crisis.
He settled on one, and it would involve asking every American to deliver any
gold in their possession to the Federal Reserve. With the issue of Executive
Order 6102, the government required citizens to surrender any 1933 gold double
eagle for melting or face criminal penalties. A year later, private gold
ownership was outlawed entirely.
Only a few of the gold double eagle coins
managed to escape this fate. Two were spared by the U.S. Mint and donated to
the Smithsonian Museum for their collection of rare coins. Another 10 were
taken by a Mint employee, leading to an international investigation that lasted
for decades and finally saw nine of them returned. The tenth coin fell into the
hands of the King of Egypt and didn't make its way back into the United States
until 1996 when the Secret Service used a sting operation to recover it.
After that coin sold at auction for a
staggering $7,590,000.00 dollars, achieving the distinction of the most
expensive coin ever sold, the world thought it had seen the last 1933 gold
double eagle. Then, three years later, in 2005, another 10 more surfaced in a
safety deposit box in New York City. Thought to be the final 10 coins in
existence, these became of a lengthy legal battle, which finally ended with the
government winning the rights to the coins and taking possession.

1861 Paquet
Gold Double Eagle
In 1861, a very talented young engraver named
Anthony Paquet had redesigned the reverse of the Gold Double Eagle coin,
creating one of the greatest rarities in American coin history. His version was
similar to the original reverse design but with taller, more compact lettering
and a narrower rim which caused problems in production.
Shortly after the new Gold Double Eagles went
to press, Mint officials decided to stop using the new dies and went back to
the original reverse. All Gold Double Eagles minted with the Paquet reverse
were recalled. Most were melted down, but two specimens were known to have been
spared. The 1861 Paquet Gold Double Eagle has become a legend in the history of
the U.S. Mint and American coinage.
Over the past 150 years, the two surviving
specimens have found their way into some of the most prestigious collections in
history. In 2008, one of these incredibly rare and historic coins sold to a
private collector for an astounding $2,500,000! Cost and scarcity make the
original 1861 Double Eagle 20-dollar gold coin unattainable for most
collectors. Layered in gleaming 24k gold and encased it in an attractive Keep-Safe
archival shell to preserve its luster. The protective case also includes a
brief synopsis of the history of this fascinating coin.
