Construction completed under Pope Leo X (1513-1521) close relative Bramante - a young Raphael Santi from Urbino (1483-1520). In the years 1517-1519. Vaults, walls, pilasters of the loggia painted the pupils of Raphael: Perino del Vaga, Giulio Romano, Giovanni da Udine, F. Penny. The motifs of reliefs and ornamental paintings are inspired by antique grotesques - the decor, discovered in 1481 in the ruins of the "Golden House" and the term of Trajan in Rome. The loggia is divided into 13 sections. In each part there are four small compositions; Four plots from the New Testament (in the first vault) and forty-eight scenes from the Old Testament (in the remaining sections) - only 52 paintings on biblical subjects framed by grotesques. Because of these paintings, the paintings of the Vatican loggias were called the "Raphael Bible" (Italian "Biblia di Raffaello"). "The Raphael Bible" made a great impression on the Russian Empress Catherine II. In the years 1778-1787. At her request in Rome, under the guidance of JF Raiffenstein and H. Unterberger, "copies" of Vatican paintings were taken to recreate the "Raphael Loggias" in the St. Petersburg Hermitage. Under the project of the architect G. Quarenghi they were included in the building of the Old Hermitage and inaugurated in 1787. Later, in 1842-1851, when the New Hermitage building was constructed under the project of L. von Klenze, the loggias were preserved, and now they can be admired Not only in Rome, but also in Northern Palmyra.
