There are certain period pieces that just have “it,” and this home-y, nostalgic child’s quilt is definitely one of them . Topped with a hand-tied , ticking-print collage of period textiles ( including an extravagant merry-go-round print that is absolutely to die for), it was obviously made with both skill and love.

But it’s the fabric on the reverse side that is so poignantly, jaw-droppingly period that people of a certain age - especially textile collectors of a certain age - will find themselves drawing in their breath with a sharp little pang.

The Indianapolis 500 novelty fabric that backs the quilt was obviously chosen for - or by- a beloved son, grandson, or nephew, and hand sewn and tied ( top) and then machine stitched ( border). I’m sure it was a treasured possession. It is a charming , wholesome piece that speaks to love, generosity and the optimism and innocence of a bygone age.

The piece is in lovely shape. The only flaw I find is a single hole in one of the appliqué pieces ( as shown). It measures 64x84” which is a size made to fit over a twin bed like a bedspread. I have shown it on a Queen, over a comforter, and I think it looks lovely that way, also. There is a thin layer of old-school cotton batting between the top and bottom of the piece. It is maybe the weight of a heavy bedspread, or a spring/ summer blanket. The design is bright and clear and the piece smells fresh and clean. It will be a wonderful addition to any period home, collection or display. Ships UPS Ground from Los Angeles.
