A very nice Machline Ware go-to-bed match holder in the signed Prince Charlie tartan, and was made by William and Andrew Smith c. 1860.

Round cylinder upright type with a slip-on lid set with a shallow bone match socket, matches would be stored inside, and the base is recessed for a sanded striker.

Made with sycamore wood, the tartan designs were printed on paper and glued to the surface of the boxes.  Black lines were painted where the joins in the paper were to occur to disguise any imperfections where the joins of the paper met, which would otherwise appear as white lines formed by the sycamore wood showing through.  Measures 2” to the top of the bone match socket and 1” in diameter.

Excellent antique condition with only very minor signs of wear under close inspection.
