condition, with minor wear, three vertical folds, and a couple of faint
pencil updates from
a previous owner on sailings from Brisbane.
Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
- Three years after this
schedule was printed, with the advent of the First World War, all of
the
Orient Line's ships were requisitioned for war service, with several
losses:
- The Otway was torpedoed and
sunk by German U-boat SM UC-49 off the Hebrides.
- The Omrah was torpedoed and
sunk by German submarine UB-52 40 nautical miles from Sardinia.
- The Otranto,
serving as a troop ship off the
Isle of Islay in late 1918, accidentally collided with another troop
ship, HMS Kashmir and was forced ashore by the
storm, killing 470 passengers, mainly American soldiers, and crewmen.
- The Orsova was damaged by a
mine laid by German submarine UC-68 and beached in Cornwall, but was
repaired in Devonport and resumed the passenger service to Australia
route in 1919. (The scan below
shows a 1911 Orient Line advertisement with a photo of the Orsova.
Her last voyage was on June 20, 1936.)
