In 1900, on the sidelines of the Universal Exhibition, Rodin organized his first major personal retrospective in Paris, Place de l'Alma. He wanted to show his work in all its forms: sculptures in various materials (bronze, marble and especially plaster), drawings (watercolours, brown ink, dry point).

The poster is adorned with a lithograph by Eugene Carrière representing Rodin modelling a variant of the Awakening. The sculptor, whose forehead stands out in the darkness, looks up at the ascending figure his hands are sculpting in the foreground.

The two men worked in the 1880s in a close communion of spirit, exchanging works and correspondences regularly. By attributing to Carrière the care of his portrait, the sculptor invited the painter to share with him a little of his international celebrity and publicly sealed the friendship that had united them for many years.
