History of the Artifact

The Drachm was a unit of currency issued by Greek City States for centuries, almost always minted in silver. The Drachm has been the monetary unit of ancient Greece since the mid 6th century BC. The word drachm derives from the Ancient Greek verb “to grasp”, and its original value was worth a handful of arrows. 

The value of a drachm was determined heavily by its weight, which tends to be around 4.3 grams. Drachma had a variety of designs stamped into them based on the region in which they were produced. Athenian obols were typically emblazoned with the face of Athena on one side, and an owl on the reverse; other regions in Greece had various designs also featuring mythological creatures and gods.
