Dawn was breaking in the hard rain on the morning of May 12, 1864. It was then that tired Union soldiers under General Hancock’s command launched a daring assault on the apex of a heavily defended Confederate line outside Spotslvania – a U-shapped, or “mule shoe,” Salient.
Stumbling noisily through mud, Hancock’s troops charged the Confederate defenses. The assault broke through at first, but the Confederates rallied with massive fire power and sheer determination. Boldly, desperately, Union troops repeated the assault, over and over again throughout the rain-soaked day. The fierce battle raged for nearly twenty-two hours as bullets, bayonets, and fists combined in furious combat, and the mud mixed with the blood. The quarter mile comprising the Confederate “Bloody Angle” became one of the most contested pieces of ground in the Civil War.
