We are pleased to offer MAO ZEDONG #28, a vintage Chinese mini propaganda poster that we acquired from a long-time British collector who once lived and traveled widely in Asia. This poster -- and others we have listed on eBay -- was designed in the 1960s or 1970s as part of a propaganda campaign to bolster the personality cult around MAO ZEDONG, who was chairman of the Communist Party of China from its creation in 1949 until his death in 1976. A ruthless leader, Chairman MAO was often depicted as a benevolent, god-like figure on these propaganda posters. He was also widely known as the Great Leader, the Great Teacher and the Great Helmsman.

The Chinese propaganda poster in this listing, as well as the others we have listed on eBay, measures approximately 15 by 10 inches (38 by 26 cm). We have titled this poster with a number MAO ZEDONG #28 to differentiate it from the other MAO graphics we have listed.

Chinese propaganda posters are prized by collectors worldwide, both for their historic and artistic value, as well as their obvious kitsch appeal. Many of these posters were originally designed as paintings, then reprinted on paper as large- or small-format posters. The large posters were typically displayed in public spaces such as railway stations. The smaller posters, such as the one in this listing, were distributed through the Chinese Communist Party’s nationwide network of bookstores. Although the posters are often dated (in Chinese and sometimes also in English), it is impossible to know when they were actually printed. We believe this poster was printed before Mao's death.
