A general rule of thumb is that the deeper you want to fish, the larger the weight of the jig head. The reason for this is that you want to get your lure into the strike zone as quickly as possible. However, you don't really want it to plummet to the bottom like a brick. The falling soft lures should look as life like as possible.

The size of the hook must suit the soft lures. If the hook is too small then there will not be enough point showing for an effective hook up. If the hook is too large, it will not provide a natural presentation. When buying jig heads and soft lures, compare them so that the correct match is selected. What size of hooks do I use with soft lures?
The chart below will give you a rough guide to hook size in relation to lure length. Note, this is only a guide, some lures will work better with larger / smaller hooks but this will come with experimentation and experience. These sizes are applicable to weed less hooks, weed less jig heads and open point jig heads.
