French fashion designer Philippe Venet, who was Hubert de Givenchy’s lifetime partner, launched his own couture fashion house in 1962. After his death in 2021, he was described as “one of the finest tailors in the history of French couture.” Philippe Venet was especially lauded for his coats from the 1960s to the 1980s. This red coat is from that era, perhaps late in the ‘80s. It is double-faced wool with folded, hand-sewn seams on the interior. The coat has no collar, long tapered sleeves that are gathered at the shoulders, and Venet's logo gold tone buttons. I've included a black and white photo pf Philippe Venet coats from Women’s Wear Daily that are from Venet’s Fall 1982 Couture Collection. This photo was included with one of our listings for a blue Venet coat that closely resembles the coats in the photo (ebay item #225237460850), but it shows you how fabulous Venet's coats were, and why his vintage pieces are so highly coveted. This red coat bears a resemblance to those coats, but it is a  lighter weight coat with a bit of a dressier appearance. Based on the chest and hip measurements, we are estimating it to be a modern size 8-10.
