พระพิราพ ถือเป็นชื่อที่มีความสำคัญ เป็นที่เคารพบูชาอย่างสูง และถือเป็นครูคนหนึ่ง ซึ่งคนที่ได้มีโอกาสไปชมการแสดงละคร ในโรงละครแห่งชาติ หรือเคยร่วมในพิธีครอบครูก็คงจะได้เห็นว่า ก่อนที่จะแสดงนั้นจะต้องมีการบูชาครู ซึ่งก็จะมีทั้งพระพิฆเนศ พระฤาษี พระปรคนธรรพ และครูท่านอื่นๆ อีกมาก รวมไปถึง "พระพิราพ" ซึ่งอยู่ในรูปของหัวโขนให้บรรดาศิษย์ได้เคารพกัน พระพิราพ คือปางหนึ่งของพระศิวะ เป็นปางที่ดุร้าย เหมือนกับพระอุมาที่มีปางเจ้าแม่กาลี พระพิราพถือเป็นเทพเจ้าแห่งความตายและสงคราม แต่อีกด้านหนึ่งก็เป็นผู้ให้ชีวิตและปัดเป่าโรคภัยได้ ในประเทศอินเดีย ซึ่งถือว่าพระพิราพ หรือพระไภรวะนี้มีความเกี่ยวข้องโดยตรงกับนาฏศิลป์ เพราะท่านเป็นผู้ให้กำเนิดท่ารำที่เรียกว่า "วิจิตรตาณฑวะ" ซึ่งเป็นท่ารำท่าหนึ่งใน 108 ท่ารำของพระศิวะ ดังนั้นจึงถือว่าท่านเป็น "นาฏราช" ที่หมู่นาฏศิลป์อินเดียให้ความเคารพเกรงกลัว เพราะถือเป็นเทพที่บันดาลความเป็นความตายได้ ส่วนในประเทศไทย ซึ่งได้รับอิทธิพลหลายๆ อย่างมาจากประเทศอินเดียนั้น ก็ได้มีการนับถือพระพิราพกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ และมีหลักฐานแน่ชัดในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 ในตำราไหว้ครูฉบับของครูเกษ (พระราม) ซึ่งมีเพลงหน้าพาทย์พระพิราพเต็มองค์ที่ใช้ประกอบพิธีไหว้ครู เพลงหน้าพาทย์พระพิราพเต็มองค์นี้ถือว่าเป็นเพลงที่มีความสำคัญมาก เพราะผู้ที่จะเรียนได้ จะต้องผ่านการเรียนหน้าพาทย์ชั้นต้น ชั้นกลาง และชั้นสูง รวมทั้งต้องมีอายุ 30 ปีขึ้นไป และผ่านการอุปสมบทมาแล้วด้วย
