This volume of the Official Records covers the details from operations in North Carolina and Southeastern Virginia from August 20, 1862 to June 3, 1863. The book contains the official correspondence and reports related to the events of the Suffolk Campaign. In 1863, Lt General James Longstreet was placed in command of the Confederate Department of Virginia and North Carolina to protect Richmond, support Lee’s Army when needed, forage and gather supplies, and capture the Union garrison at Suffolk. The principal events include the skirmishes, battles and operations in and around Suffolk including the numerous skirmishes enroute and in the vicinity of Suffolk, the siege of Suffolk, the Battle of Norfleet House, the Battle at Hill’s Point, the expedition from New Berne (NC), the destruction of salt-works in Matthews County, the lifting of the siege, and associated other actions and operations.
These include, but are not limited to, those associated with the events and/or battles throughout the campaign as well as other materials. This book provides extensive first-hand battlefield reports, orders and accounts on the actions of during these operations. The set contains the official correspondence from many of the key leaders from both the Union and Confederate armies associated with movements, preparation and battles associated with the campaign.
