GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Antique primitive salt glazed stoneware three gallon size churn, made in Bennington, Vermont, by cousins, Julius and Edward Norton, 1850 - 1859.

HISTORY:

With the long history of the Norton Pottery, the stoneware made there, covered just about all spectrums and categories of American antique stoneware. The primitive ovoids of the early years to the highly decorated ware, depicting antlered deer and log cabins of the later years. In the middle of all those almost 100 years of stoneware manufacture, were the Julius Norton years. Julius's tenure represented the turn towards creativity and artistry which brought beauty and remarkable use of cobalt blue glaze to the forefront.

Julius hired artisans from around New England that had shown themselves to be extraordinary in their artisan fields. He sought out people with extraordinary talents to bring out beauty and grace in what had been a darker, primitive craft. It was this forward thinking that created the most wonderous of all periods in the Norton stoneware story...the Julius era.

MEASUREMENT:

This is a smaller size churn, three gallon and approximate Measurements 15 1/2" tall. The churn has a somewhat ovoid form slightly bellied at the midsection at 10" and a base which is 9" wide. The churn was most likely purchased for a medium size family, perhaps four or five people on a smaller farm. Larger examples were also made up to six gallons and 20" tall, and one smaller size of two gallons that we have seen.

CONDITION: USED, PREOWNED

This churn like most, was used on a daily basis and... also like most, had some issues from use and the continual pounding of the dasher. There are mid-body lines and intersecting lines on one side & inside the cavity. There is some a small lip flake from use, both on the exterior. Remember this is an old churn that was used daily. The price reflects used condition. See pictures and feel free to ask questions before purchase.

DESCRIPTION:

The churn has on the face this completely amazing floral of Poppies in bud and bloom. The cobalt blue used to do this work was thickly applied and came out of the kiln REALLY BLUE and without error. There are two Poppy buds and one big bloom here, along with associated leaves and tendrils. It is STUNNING!

Above the Poppies are the capacity (3) and maker stamps washed in blue as well and reads;
