It's really important to dry your flute or clarinet properly after playing, especially if it's then going to be shut up in its case for a few days. Nothing causes your pads to deteriorate faster than moisture, and after being played for a while your instrument will be full of it.  

Just take your clarinet or flute apart, drop the weighted end of the tape into each section separately (less chance of it snagging), let it pop out of the other end and pull the swab through smoothly and slowly. Repeat a couple of times and the moisture will be on the swab rather than inside your instrument.  

You can get posh versions of these (Vandoren, Yamaha, etc) for over £10.
