Devonmoor Pottery 1 Pint Barrel Shape Tankard Mug - Widecombe Fair

Large barrel shaped tankard featuring a multi coloured raised horse and riders decoration depicting the Widecombe Moor song

'Widecombe Fair', also called 'Tom Pearce', is a Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widecombe with his friends. Its chorus ends with a long list of the people travelling to the fair - Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke Old Uncle Tom Cobbley and all

Devonmoor Art Pottery was started in 1923 in Liverton on the edge of Dartmoor. It was set up by Herford Hope with the help of his wife. Over the years many decoraters/helpers came and went. This tankard (which dates to the 1940/50s) is signed DRH to the base who was Daisy Rees-Hill and was one of the more prolific painters. The pottery was in decline from the 1960s and eventually closed around 1981
