Early 2005, the United States Mint unveiled a new 2005 (P)
Philadelphia Mint Mark nickel a captivating new design for the nickel coin,
affectionately known as the Buffalo Nickel. This striking depiction of an

Historical Roots of the Buffalo Nickel:
The Buffalo Nickel, originally designed by James Earle
Fraser, first circulated in 1913. It quickly became a cherished symbol of the
Old West and American wilderness. However, the design was retired in 1938 and
replaced by the Jefferson Nickel.
Revival of the Design:
In 2005, as part of the 'Sacagawea and Golden Dollar Native
American Coin Series,' the United States Mint revived the beloved Buffalo
Nickel design on the reverse of the Jefferson nickel. The new coin featured the
same iconic imagery but with enhanced details and an updated date.
First Strikes:
The initial production run of new 2005 (P) Philadelphia Mint
Mark Buffalo Nickels held immense significance as they represented the revived
design. A select number of these coins were designated as 'First Strikes rolled
and boxed by Inspector Number 3341.
Hand-Stamped Authentication:
To further authenticate their status as First Strikes, this
box was hand-stamped by Inspector Number 3341. This unique marking guaranteed
that these coins were among the very first produced with the new design.
Unopened Box of 2000 Nickels:
A rare and exceptional find, a box of 2000 unopened 2005
Buffalo Nickels remains sealed to this day. The box bears the date March 11,
2005, confirming its status as a collection of First Strikes.
